On-device intelligence for Pixel

Current role. Android System Intelligence and Pixel — the proactive, contextual layer that became Magic Cue and now ships as Gemini intelligence, built to run locally so personal data never leaves the device.

01

Magic Cue, now Gemini intelligence

Magic Cue is the proactive layer on Pixel 10 — it reads the context you are already in and surfaces the relevant detail from across your apps at the moment you need it, rather than making you go find it. A flight time pulled into a message, a restaurant booking offered during the call about it. It launched on Pixel 10 with Android 16 and has since been folded into the Gemini intelligence branding.

  • Proactive cross-app suggestions surfaced in place, not in a separate assistant
  • Powered by Gemini models running on-device, so personal context stays on the handset
  • Privacy as an architectural property rather than a policy promise
  • Shipped on Pixel 10 with Android 16

Beyond the handset

The feature does not stop at the phone. He helped integrate it into Wear OS and Android Auto, so the same proactive layer meets you on the watch and in the car — and its requirements fed back into the platform itself, influencing the development of new Android APIs.

In the spotlight

The feature has been demonstrated live at two consecutive Made by Google keynotes. It debuted at Made by Google '25, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, as a launch feature of the Pixel 10. A year later at Made by Google '26, Stephanie Scott — one of Google's Pixel Directors — demoed it live on stage with host Trevor Noah. Off the stage, the work anchors Google's official “Introducing Gemini Intelligence” ad.

In the press

Android Authority's explainer covers what Magic Cue does on Pixel 10, which apps it draws from, and how the on-device processing works. A year later, 9to5Google's Pixel 11 Pro initial review singled the feature out under its Gemini intelligence branding — the proactive layer now opens rich bottom sheets with calendar availability, place listings, and flight details, so you can verify what the AI found before acting on it. The review's screenshots show it at work.

  • Draws context from Calendar, Chrome, Docs, Files, Gmail, Messages, Photos and YouTube
  • Suggestions surfaced inline in Messages, like a tappable chip for a place mentioned in chat
  • Calendar availability pulled up in place to answer scheduling questions
